Food

Huhu restaurant.

This lovely welcoming restaurant is situated in Waitomo Caves village. This is a 5 minute stroll from your accommodation. The HuHu is open from 12 noon everyday. If you want somewhere to relax and taste some of New Zealand’s excellent microbrewery beers this is the place. The food is always sumptuous and beautifully presented. It is preferable to book so that you can guarantee a table at the time that will most suit you. If the weather is balmy try the outside eating area that has pretty views across the village and up to the historic hotel building.

Waitomo General Store

The Store as it is affectionately known is also in the village and opens early in the morning to cater for anyone who is not lucky enough to have had breakfast made for them. The store is an easygoing café with plenty of history (pictures of the store from by gone eras are displayed in the café). It is open through to 5.30pm although on occasion has been known to stay open till 6pm. It is a lovely place for lunch. The homemade pies are recommended. It is also a handy place to pick up some local produce, everything from honey to organic beef. This also a good place to hunt down some local craftwork. If you are going to do day trips to the beach or some of the walks in the area getting a packed lunch at the store will set you up for a good day.

Curly’s Bar

Also situated in the village, this is a good place to get some honest pub grub, hang out with some locals, drink beer and watch sport on their big screen. If you are in to rugby and there is a big match on then this is the place to see it. The pub is open for lunch. It also houses an ATM. So a useful place to know.

The Morpork Pizzeria

The Morpork is situated in the Kiwi Paka hostel in the village. The Morpork makes a variety of gourmet pizzas. If you have had a hard day adventuring and all you want to do is sit back and relax at the Abseil Inn, then why not pick up a pizza and retreat back to the comfort of your accommodation?

The Thirsty Weta

If you happen to be out and about in Otorohanga then the Thirsty Weta is a lively little place. They open mid morning and have menus for brunch, lunch and dinner. So it is easy to find something you are going to enjoy. Occasionally in the evening there is a band. It also has a licensed bar.

The Caves Motor Inn

This is situated 9km outside the village. If you turn towards highway 3 from Waitomo and turn right at the intersection you will find the Motor Inn 150m down the road on your right. This is a buffet style restaurant. There is plenty of choice and is good value.
